I have a Picasso clown fish for about a year now. I added a smaller snowflake clownfish to be its mate about 6 months ago. I recently upgraded my tank to a waterbox 25 peninsula. And I noticed my one Picasso clown fish (larger one) is burrowing in the corner. It only does it for a few seconds at a time and only in that one spot. It’s not rubing on any other spots or rocks. Never seen it do this before. Is it a tressed from the move? I also switched out the sand from crushed coral to Carib sea Fiji pink. I don’t see any ich spots on it. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

Clowns are weird! Although it could be related to a disease or irritation, more likely it is the female trying to get the attention of the male. Good luck with this pair!

They really are. I do see my little one hosting (right term?) in my big Duncan from time to time.

My maroon female dug like that in a corner and hung out until I got her a nem haha. I agree with @Peace River clowns are super weird

Typically it would be the anemone (or Duncan) doing the hosting, but I know what you meant. :)

It is all part of the mystery, madness, and magic of keeping clownfish!

Interesting. Maybe I’ll look into getting a bubble tip nem . . .
Just remember that nems like mature tanks. Your tank looks like it is off to a good start, but the nem may struggle if the tank isn't well established. Good luck with whatever you choose!

It’s been running for a bit over a year. What are your thoughts on how much longer you would wait? Or signs to look for?

Youre probably good to add a nem. I added mine into a 6 month tank at the time. They came from a 4 year old tank that I bought from a guy on FB. I had to move them into the 70 as there were complications setting the 125 up. The nems in the 70 are thriving and doing well! Just keep good water for them and you should for sure be okay in a year old tank. I dose red sea AB+ every day for my corals and nems!

Normally a year is a good general estimate. Clowns don't require anemones, but it certainly is fun to watch clowns interact with them!

Yes it is! My maroon jumps from nem to nem. She thinks they are all her. She just recently let the little male I have with her live in one haha

what’s your thoughts on a bubble tip in a 25 gallon mixed reef tank? I have a waterbox 25 peninsula that’s not too packed yet with corals, I’m just worried about the size and what I’ve read about bubble tips in a mixed reef tank. I do have a couple really small hammers in the back. Would you recommend a bubble tip for a 25 gallon mixed reef tank? Or should I get a bigger hammer and place it in the sand where they are burrowing? Hopefully they use that as a host? Thanks

I have a big BTA in my 25 pen. I have sps and lps. My spotcinctus clown does this but when it’s sleeping it goes and does that in the corner.

I moved a couple of the sps over because the nem is getting huge. This is an old shot. But if you like Nems why not! They may take over though

I think a BTA would be fine! Ive got 4 with a bunch of other corals. I just figured out where they like to walk and avoided putting corals in those areas. The only issue I have with them is they seem to really really like a rock I got a while ago with a zoa colony and keep burying their foot onto it and it stings that zoa colony. But otherwise no issues with them! My maroon that was burrowing immediately took to the BTAs when I but them in and she darts to all of them all day long!
