I am having success growing phytoplankton in a 1.5 pint mason jar with LED lights and air slowly bubbling from the bottom. It is placed in a window and I shake the jar once or more per day to keep the phyto suspended.

I am using instant ocean reef crystals mixed to 1.19 with RODI water.

I am also adding 1/8th of a teaspoon of miracle grow concentrate. I have read where others have used a fertilized specifically developed for salt water tanks.

I am wondering if the instant ocean reef crystals have the nutrients needed to grow the phytoplankton?

Do I really need to add fertilizer and if so which is the best?

This thread documents my LED Illuminated Grow Jar.

Thanks for your advice.
