If I had the room I would definitely go bigger but the big thing for me is that I made the mistake of going with a cheaper tank that has crappy glass (or maybe it's acrylic). So the fact that it's just a 5g isn't an issue, but the glass is. I compare it to the FW tank I got used years ago. It's a rimless, 15g that the seller advertised as being low iron. I had no idea what that meant but I got it as a complete setup for $40. It's only now that I have my FW and SW side by side that I understand the importance of quality glass. What a difference in viewing pleasure!! I might covert the 15g to saltwater and move my 5g over but that would mean I would have to setup another tank for my fw fish (they're not going anywhere). That puts me back to not having the space. Haha. I will probably source out another 5g but one that is good quality! Note to the newbs: Don't skimp out on the tank!! :-)

Definitely! Seems others would also agree, your tank is the first important step. In my case though, I just have quickly realized that I am unable to houses certain or more fish, that with every coral both less and less grow out room, and how I am great restricted in the aqua scape department. I hope everything continues to go well on your end and best of wishes!

Three things: First, I would get a larger tank with a sump. Second, I would have gotten the good live rock, not mediocre LFS rock. Third, I would have gotten leather corals.
+1 on a lager tank with a sump. Very limited on equipment and filtration with an aio (all in one) tank.

I wish my tank was like the TARDIS.. small on the outside big on the inside. It would be wondrous if I could keep fitting inhabitants in there and never run out of room. LOL I agree the space constraints are a p.i.t.a. I'll probably end up with a bunch of tiny tanks all over my house just so I can keep the buying frenzy going. Haha.

When I started my 75 gallon tank 10 years ago, I just kinda threw rocks in haphazardly. There's never been any "wow" factor with it. I've decided to redo my tank, and this time I want to build an actual aquascape that I can need proud of.

There are several things I would do over. First and foremost I would make sure all my plumbing has the ability to be easily taken apart for periodic cleaning and easily reassembled, especially after 90 degree elbows. Second I would get a rimless tank. My current 215 gal DT has a center glass brace which is a pain. Third I would get a center external overflow built into the tank, [like a coast to coast], instead of internal towers. Fourth I would not introduce caulerpa to my refugium. I started with just chaeto and a friend offered me some "other" type of macro algae. This other algae was very aggressive and although it has not worked its way into my DT it has infiltrated my frag tank. This requires alot of maintenance...constantly trying to keep it out of my frag tank and my frags.....total pain.

I would have gone a different direction with my lighting. Lighting for a 72'x24"x24"is pretty big bucks so I cheaped out and went black box to save $1600 or more. I wish I would have spent the money just for the controllability aspect. They are growing coral very nicely, but its 2 channel - each ON or OFF.

If I could redo something, I would start with a bigger tank, knowing I'd get this addicted lol!
I wouldn’t have bought a used tank. There were scratches that were hard to see until it was filled and is the first place diatoms collect. It would have been a modest expenditure considering the total investment.
