If you are going canister, Eheim is a great one. I have some that are more than 20 years old still going strong.
I'll second this. When I first started out with my 46 bowfront I had a Marlineland canister filter. It leaked after about a year. After some research I ended up with an Eheim and it was great. No leaks, quiet, and absolutely no issues for the 5-6 years I used it. I left the original filter pad and got rid of the filter floss and bio-balls that came with it. Instead I used chemi-pure and some seachem nitrade reducing rocks, and every once in a while I'd put in a polyfilter in there as well. You'll have to stay on top of cleaning it since waste will accumulate quickly and will cause your nitrates to spike, but once my tank had been established for a while and I got lazy I could go almost 2 months without cleaning it. I also ran a skimmer (Aqua-C Remora hang on)
