What's the difference between Miyagi Tort Vs Cali Tort?
Can someone enlighten me?

Some reefers do confuse the Oregon Blue Tort with the Cali Tortuosa or “Cali Tort”, another sought after coral. The key difference is the Cali Tort has some greenish hues on its body whereas the Oregon Blue Tort is a solid, deep blue. I am a big fan of the Cali Tort as well but nothing beats the eye catching blue of the Oregon Blue Tort…..at least in my book.

Quote from " reef bum"

My BC Miyagi tort has a lot of green so far.

Wow, this was such an OG argument way back when

Cali and Myagi are similar enough that it's not worth having both.

Between those and true Oregon Tort is

"About 5 bank accounts, 3oz and 2 vehicles"

Its funny that every coral that looks Tortish green with blue tips is being called a Miyagi…LOL. So there are many’s wanna bes and difficult to determine when frags, but a true “Miyagi” isn’t a Tort at all that grows more horizontal than vertical like a Tort does. A little history ….I was able to get a small frag many years ago from John at Atlantis in Cali, for those remember. It started with John Nguyen, Rob Z and I think John Coppolino too. John N. nickname, was you guessed it, was Mr Miyagi because he trimmed his corals like the character in the Karate kid. I lost my colony a couple of years ago,but here is the skeleton so you can see the growth pattern

Thanks for all the replies, but I'm still not clear on what the differences are. Maybe there is no difference other than the Miyagi grows horizontal and the Cali grows vertical?
Anyone else with thoughts?
I already know what an Oregon Tort looks like and I wasn't looking for opions on that.

I can tell you that on mine both have a green inner body but the tips on the Cali are deep blue and the Myagi bright purple. I do not have an Oregon but it is on my list.

Matt

Myagi is a normal bright green base with pink and purple coralites and growth in the branches. Cali tort is pretty much a purple tort with bright blue tips. Pretty easy to tell apart unless they are both not colored up well. The cali can get some green in the bottom parts of the branches but nothing like the myagi torts. Also I have found the myagi tends to bush out and the cali forms more uniform long branches.

My myagi is more blue and thicker. My cali grows very fast with more green. Both are great but prefer myagi.

Hmmm.... seems like I'm never going to get to the bottom of this because everyone has a different opinion. Some say Miyagi has more blue and some say more purple. Some say Miyagi has green and other say Cali has more green...etc.
I guess I'll just have to call mine an unknown tort.
Thank you to everyone who replied.

Let's clarify,
Cali and blue green tort are very similar, growth patterns are usually determined by tank flow and lighting. These 2 are both going to show a rich green hue in base in lower par with a rich blue mainly throughout. In higher light, ime, both become mainly a rich blue with electric blue towards tips.
Miyagi is completely different. These 2 next to each other would be contrasting, imo.
The Miyagi Tort has a mainly light blue body with light green hues in base, and in some cases pinkish tips. This one has a metallic appearance. A simple Google search on the ORA Blue/Green Tort should best represent the Cali/ Blue Green Tort. I usually keep both in my system, but unfortunately only Miyagi in my current lineup. Here is a recent pic of my Miyagi.
Cheers

I don’t see either of those being a cali tort, they look like the same coral. Cali tort does not have any green in it unless it’s a deeper Forrest green in the base of the branches. And the tips are super blue. Myagi more purple and pink, with the average neon/standard green color in the base.
Guys buddies first pic is a cali tort. Lots of blue tips and blue/purple body sometimes with forest green in the base. I don’t see how it is that confusing. Reefbum has a cali on his site that looks great if anyone needs more images just look online. You can even see in cali tort the axials have light green rings in the center. Myagi doesn’t.
