We have a black looking bushy sharp substance that is overrunning our tank. The fish are not bothered by it but we have lost a frogspawn, 2 mushrooms, a candy cane that were all flourishing. It came within 24 hours of putting a new coral in. We have done weekly water changes now upped to twice per week. We have used 1 whole bottle of vibrant with no affect. The level are fine and our filter is rarely that dirty when we do water changes but this stuff just keeps growing. We cannot brush it off the rocks. I cant pull it off with my fingers. It is bristly to touch not soft. I have attached 2 photos.

Hair algae. Cyano or dinos. Are you using RODI water?

Post a pic in white light, that would be better.

No its well water
That’s most likely the problem. Well water can have all kinds of elements in it which not only can grow algae but be detrimental to the health of fish and corals. If you want to be successful and not be frustrated by algae and potentially corals and fish dying, get yourself a RODI unit.

Ok well I have had this tank for 2 years using well water and it was doing great until this stuff began to grow. My tank was beautiful for a long time. Thanks for the advice but I want to know what this stuff is please

It most likely came in on the newly introduced coral. It’s invasive algae. Hard to see in pics. My first thought was hair algae but hair algae isn’t sharp or bristly. It could be bryopsis which is relly tough to eradicate.

There is some cyano because I used so much vibrant but its not this greeny black bristly stuff. It is not the slimy dino. It is bristly and bushy and its way more aggressive than hair algae and vibrant kills hair algae..it didn't even touch this

Dude that's the internet for you! If you have a PhD in whatever and ask a question they will only say you're doing this and this and this wrong, you're an idiot then they go on to boast about whatever they have. People need to stop acting like they hold a crown and know everything. Congrats on a well established tank! Usually if its a few patches, it's bound to happen at some point. One of those hairs will just multiply and thrive eventually. A tiny piece is all it needs and that's just nature being resilient. If I were you I would make sure to find out what creature eats that kind of algae and get that creature as long as it's compatible lol.

That is bryopsis my friend i just got rid of mines using fluconazole its the only way to eliminate it. Get reeflux from amazon and use 1 pill per 10 gallon, in two weeks it will all be gone.

SO I checked it out, here are some things that eat it.

elysia viridis, Placida dendritica and Limapontia capitata "My experience with Bryopsis feeders, however, in lab experiments is that they consume the alga so fast that it is difficult to supply them with adequate food so they would soon starve to death." Via seaslugforum.net

sea hares are reported to eat it but it is not their main diet
as well here is another post from maast.org

lhoy..
Well if the pic i posted is indeed Bryopsis i HAD an infestation untill i got the ugliest Sea Hare id ever seen!! along with a lawnmower blenny PROPS to Ed @ Wolfreef!!! My Tank looked like a JUNGLE it was everywhere the walls the corals even in the SAND i wanted to just :cry CRY! It was that BAD and in 5 days it went from these before pics that were taken 3 days into the chow down to the after pics taken today! the Sea hare and LM Blenny chomped down on everything in their path cause everything is GONE.. i had Cyano/diatoms/and TONS of that green algae.. They are NON-STOP... just not sure what they will feed on once everything is gone??? :unsure
Let me know where you're located and maybe i can ship him to you??

Lol yeah I am working on that. I would rather have a natural way to kill it. Thanks for your comment :)
