What is this thing.

From the looks of it, just a little ol' bristleworm of the non-predatory type. Free cleanup crew, essentially XD

yep that a bristleworm or fireworm, nothing wrong with them just dont touch them or you will get stung.

oh that's what It thought It was but I figured I would ask... love all the help everyone just picked up a rescue tank and fish this thing is in bad shape

Yeah, don't grab it and you should be fine. XD
Make any changes slowly, including water chemistry; if things have been off for a long time, bringing them back too fast will be as big of a shock as if everything was suddenly bad.

Asterina star, most are harmless algae eaters, some types become invasive and a few eat zoanthids or other corals. It's a wait and watch type of hitch-hiker imo. Those that have had populations explosions or lost corals to them will probably advise you to remove it.

If that's one of the totally-white asterinas like I think it is, forum consensus seems to be it's fine, whereas any with color are potential coral-eaters,

Kewl so far I have only seen one but I will def keep an eye out but I'm normally all for keeling all the extra critters as long as they aren't going to wipe out the other inhabitants.

They're like roaches, if you see one then you probably have 100.... That's kind of scary because when I look at my tank I see hundreds......

If it is grey and it looks like it on my monitor get rid of it. They are in my tank also. Somehow were introduced about 2 months ago and are taking over. They have nearly wiped out all of the coraline and are irratating the corals. I have had some minor losses as well. Pick them out when you see them. Better safe than sorry.

I was told they were harmless. I regret not getting rid of them now. There may be safe ones but mine turned out not to be. Just my opinion...

I saw this and thought "oh great, that little booger is munching my chalice!"

About a minute later I realized the chalice was eating the star!

Well I am not going to say a chalice is a predator of asterina, but it was cool to watch.

hey thanks for all the feed back it helps a lot if any one else has something weird feel free to post on this thread =)
