It's hard to tell from the picture, but it is more likely a tunicate or sponge. How long have you had the rock?

I had Aiptasia anemones on live rock show up like this after a few months. They had been though the ringer, so they looked pretty bad. Eventually, they begin to look more like Aiptasia. I think that's what you're seeing.

How new? My Dino bloom last year had thick strings like that but then again, it was strings everywhere so that’s probably not it.

I personally don’t think that’s aiptasia! I just had a whole tank full of it and they never looked like that.
