Hey, anyone know what this is? I've looked at thousands of google pics and think it might be some type of gorgonian? Any ideas? Doesn't move but isn't anchored. Current keeps it on the rock and it seems to like it there. This pic is about a week old. It has grown a bit since then and is a much healthier shade of lavender. When I got it it was white, and looked dead so I was going to take it home and dry it out but ended up deciding to put it in the new tank to see what happened.

Nope, don't think so. The purple things are shaped differently. However, most of the pics i saw were of healthy examples, and mine is recovering from being half dead floating in a cove. Some people have told me it is an Anemone, but I don't know what kind it would be since it doesn't seem to match anything I've been able to look up at all.

Yea, I'd say a Nem, but until its able to color up and extend, who knows what type.

I would say nem as well. I would love to see a current pic to see how it is progressing.

So, if this is an anemone, is it safe to keep fish in here? Forgive my ignorance, but it looks so different from anything I've seen with a little clownfish nestling in it that I am super cautious about getting a fish. I already jacked up my emerald crab after my nitrates spiked to 80 ppm all of a sudden. I fixed it, but now I am so freaked out about putting anything in there I am trying to do lots of research so I don't have any more involuntary crab slaughter.

Doesn't look like an anemone to me! Let's ask the R2R Facebook fans! Be right back!

If it is a Nem, you rfine putting fish in with it, they will stay away from it.

Ok here are some thoughts from the fans:

sea cucumber
really mad condy anemone
bleached anemone
sad anemone
coldwater anemone
macro algae
gorgonian
cuttlefish egg cluster

I wonder if it could be an egg capsule from a whelk or other snail, it looks like the purple bits are connected to a cord that runs the length of it?

This was going to be my guess.

I do have a question. Op you said "When you got it" did you buy it or was it a hitchhiker? If you bought it, what was it sold to you as?

To me it looks to be an egg sack of some sort seeing how some have the purple inside and some seem 'empty' Just a thought though I could be wrong

Oh, wow! Ok, so it was floating in Teach's Hole, where Blackbeard was beheaded. The water is very, very warm there. All the parts that are purple now were completely white with the green cord running through it. I thought it was cool, so I was going to dry it, but then I figured I'd throw it in my brand new first time ever to try this stuff saltwater tank and it started turning purple, growing longer and growing new tiny purple things along the cord.
Hmm, ok so let's go through the suggestions from facebook:
Gorgonian? Maybe
Sad anemone? Sad? Yes. Anemone? Who knows?
Cuttlefish egg cluster? Nope, unless eggs grow more eggs, no.
Cold water anemone? Very cool and one or two were somewhat close, but I don't think so
Eggs? Ok, so these are the right color, but they are not all the same size, and it grows, almost like a plant and when it sits in the current it sort of opens up in the middle almost like it has a mouth. BUT, you are right! They are the right shape.
phymanthus crucifer? It's not soft, so sorry, no.
SO, I agree with Mr. Microscope. A lilac fell in my tank, and now it's breeding snails on it's own.
So... the plot thickens.
Another clue... as it grows it's new little arm, it has a little string of mucus extending out past the arm. SO, I thought it might be some type of coral, finally well enough to let me know it is stressed. This is maddening, but highly interesting that all these people really have never seen it. The eggs are the closest shape, but how do eggs multiply on their own??
It now has a name. Mary.
