Hello all,
Last week I set up my very first saltwater aquarium, I've done lots of freshwater but this was my first time experiencing a saltwater tank. I have done hours of research and I'm obsessed with not only the fishkeeping hobby, but also marine biology and the science behind aquatic life. Here is my equipment list so far:
Fluval Roma 90
Fluval 100w heater
Fluval U2 filter
2500lph powerhead
Dual T8 tube fixture
Two 18000k 15w T8 lights (looking into swapping one with a blue one)
API Master Saltwater Test kit
Refractometer (properly calibrated)
I don't know how, but with just a week of ghost feeding my tank cycled. I had an ammonia spike, then nitrite spike and now it's settled at 20ppm nitrate and 0 nitrite and 0 ammonia. Don't ask how, but I've always had amazing experiences with cycling. (Once cycled my 40gallon goldfish tank in 3 days!)
Yesterday, I received my 8kg of live rock and 20kg of Aragonite Coral Sand. I put the rock in and proceeded to put about 10kg of sand in as well. The water cleared in a matter of hours and here's what it looks like:
I am hoping to get a clownfish pair, a firefish soon, and in a few months some softy corals. (Maybe a hermit crab or 2?)
My question is, when I got my live rock, I noticed this 'thing' I tried pulling it off as it looked like a fish poop of some sort, but it was stretchy and I didn't want to damage it any further if it was alive. This is cultured rock, so grown in vats where there is apparently no risk of harmful hitchhikers. Can anyone tell me what it is?
Thanks,
~Mudkipz
