What is this on my zoa?

Hi all!

Not sure if this is the correct section or not but,

I've had this zoa for about 3-4 weeks now and I've noticed this strange antenna like structure slowly make its way out of the side and im not sure if I should try and rip it out or not. Doesnt seem to be affecting the zoa as it is thriving pretty well.

That looks like algae to me, in which case you want to rip it off from the root with some tweezers. Try blowing water at the zoa so that it closes and you can take a better look, or look at night time with a flash light.

If it’s coming out of its mouth it’s poop! Don’t rip it off.

Where is it attached to? Can you turn the frag and get another shot under white lights

Looks to me like Macro Algae.

Most macro algaes are usually harmless.

Some Macro like Bubble Macro Algae, Cabage Algae, Turf are a big nuisance.

Generally want to have control over your display tank.
If you want to grow macro Algae in your sump you want control over it's growth. You want to be able to harvest it out when too much accumilates.

Personally I would get the Zoa's to shrink up. Look between each Zoa head and do your best to remove the Macro Algae. Carve it out by ensuring you get the rock the Macro is growing on.

No Problem.

You don't have to rush....but do a good job or removing every little bit.

This was 20 years ago, my old 65 Gallon In-Wall Tank. THIS WAS BEFORE.

I had some Calupera MACRO Algae come on a rock.
It grew pretty at first. Added some green to the tank.

Boy was I wrong. This was AFTER

At least that type of MACRO was fairly Easy to remove. I grew it on purpose, it was the Refuge for another larger tank, and I actually enjoy the Algae Forest in my Basement Tank.

Don't ever let some GREEN Hair Algae get into your tank.
This was before.

AFTER (It happened 100% my Fault. I was over feeding all the Corals). Never Spray feed the tank. Spot feed.

Keep your tank:
- > Pest free,
- > Avoid Invaside or super aggresive species of Corals.
-> QT your fish

and you will still have challenges, but less.



One more example since you like Zoa's.

I really like the green Button Paly's. I got one.
I really liked Green Hair mushrooms so I got one.

One became two, and so on....

Now 15 year later I can't get rid of either of them and they are taking over the tank.

Mushroom Patch is Top Right. Clown have hosted that patch and they love it.
The Green Paly's I don't have to point out.

Sure they look nice, but some days I wish I never got either of them.

The Blue mushrooms on the Right I love, however I'm keeping them under control (for now)

I preffer LPS. Don't need to feed the corals. Plenty of wavy flow motion. Colors great.

Few years ago my Tank was nothing but LPS and stuff.

That old look is what I'm trying to get back to.
