I have been having a major meltdown with my tank, I have posted a few times on this issue but I’m still not out of the woods. Apologies to anybody reading my tales of woe again, but it’s a bit of a crisis in my house!
I had crap growing all over my rock, some general algae, some hair algae, some whisky stuff that looks like algae but very pale, some other general floating bits moving round the water column.
I figured the best way to clean it all was to start downstream of the filter sock. I drained the first section of the sump, clean, fill up with fresh water, move on. Second section the same, and so on. Last I go to my display tank, blast everything properly with a strong power head, toothbrush stubborn bits and capture everything in the filter sock. I turned it over for 2 to 3 hours and I had to empty my filter sock 5 times as they were full of sludge. By now, I’ve finished the full loop, so in my mind my sump should stay clean, because the 200 micron filter sock is sieving all the water? Right?
24 hrs later, my sump is covered in a load of white granular looking whisky crap again.... how is this happening? And what is it? It’s all over the bottom of every section of the sump again, and in the little bit of macro algae that I managed to save (all the rest I had to throw yesterday).
Any ideas what this stuff is, and how to I kill it? I have ordered a 55w uv coming on Thursday, does this help with this stuff? This stuff is seriously testing my patience.
many help would me hugely appreciated.

It is exactly what it looks like. White slime disease. Go to Dr. Fosters and get the Waste Away and Refresh. It will break down the slime so it can be filtered out. Prepare to change your filter sock or whatever you use to filter once or even twice a day until the worst of it is broken up. Hope this helps . Thx

Is that really what it’s called? White slime disease? I’ve been using nopox, and had my skimmer offline for the last 10 days while my medication was cycling which may have fuelled the problem. So is it not dinos? Thanks.

Hi no it’s white slime and it goes away if u take care of it but may take a while . Yes the nopox did it. I’m not sure what others calm it but I was told that was the scientific name by a reef expert years ago that had that issue . Thx

I’ve searched for it, and looks like a few people have had the same problem using nopox. I stopped skimming for 10 days during medication, but kept adding nopox. Disaster.
thanks.
