What is this taking over my tank

I have this spreading in my tank on several areas and it's over running my zoanthids. Any thoughts appreciated. I have searched and cannot determine what it is, so I don't know how to get rid of it. I have tried pulling it off the rock but it doesn't pull off easily or cleanly. Any advice? I was able to yank this piece out, it's about 3/4 inch tall, and tough.

Does it feel flabby and leathery and is there stuff coming out of the ends underwater? Looks like the tubes of some colonial hydroids, especially being ribbed like that

It looks a lot like colonial hydroids...let me see if the ends open up like that.

Let me verify, good question, it doesn't look like that under light...i will wait until the tank goes dark.

Vematid snails, they will definitely take over. You can try manual removal and reduce nutrients in the tank to prevent them from flourishing.

My vote is colonial hydroids. I’ve had them before and they spread quick and a pain to remove. They lodge into rock crevices and hard to reach. And, they smell bad when you pull them out of the tank. I used sharp tweezers to pull them out but it was painstaking and they came back if you didn’t get the whole thing.

I had a few matted filefish and or Jade filefish eat hydriods before , but I do not know how good they would do if you have a plague of hydroids

sounds like a job for fresh carbon if you are going to go into an aggressive cleaning program
