can someone please help me identify this thing growing on an old hermit crab shell? It's got a little tube and then it swirls like an ice cream cone and it's purple in color (hard to tell from the photo) - thanks!

I think so, Yes . They are hard to finish off for good. Make sure you get the entire base & all.

They can irritate corals. But i have a bunch. Including a huge one in my hammer. He doesnt bother it at all. Even when his catch string touchs it. :) most would ditch it. But i love critters. Lol

Thanks Cracker! Right now all I see are a few but they are all on old snail shells. I can just pull out the shells and hope none have made it to the live rock yet...

Really Wiz?! Thanks for the info! I'm new to the hobby and I have to admit it's always exciting to see something alive in your tank that you didn't put there to start with! At least not on purpose. Lol

That last statement is exactly why I love this hobby. So much in one tank that you don't even know what's there. As I said they may cause a problem eventually so you might want to be careful but personally I leave them. Enjoy
