What is this tubular thing?

I have these tubular things in several places in my tank, though I never see anything coming out of them. I wasn't too worried until I saw them on my candy canes. Anyone know what they are? Good or bad? They don't seem to be doing anything.

My bet is that they are vermetid tube snails. HERE's a link.
 
The second picture looks like a Vermetid. Those hard calcareous tubes that are everywhere, especially in a new tank, are called Spirorbidae. They can spread everywhere. I break them off they can become a real pest.

+1 get as close to rock as possable and snap them off they will spread
 
I have a ton of them. They are a filter feeder and their webs might irritate corals from full PE. I only break them off If I see they are irritating a coral. You will never kill them all.
