What is this under my Blasto rock?

Looks like a filter feeder due to the center white spots (mouths maybe?)…just hoping it’s not something bad like aiptasia.

They kind of sprouted one day, weren’t there a few ago. Any one know what they could be?

Looks like aiptasia.

Oh no! Am I gonna have to burn my Blasto?!? I don’t even know how it got there, it’s almost like it was dormant for weeks and decided to wake up one day

I dont think aiptasia have glowing centers. They don't appear to be a hydroid sp either.

Doesn't look like any aiptasia I've seen. Looks like a species of star polyps, a Briareum.

I guess it could be some kind of star polyp (that would explain the exponential spread rate). What color are they with the lights on?

on the base is a poriferan sponge known as cryptic sponge and can be evasive. You can pull it off/away with either a dentalpic or small crochet needle and discard. They favor dark, low flow areas

I would be very surprised if that was a sponge. Those tentacles, to me, clearly point towards some type of octocoral. The body plan is too colonial and organized to say sponge to me.

I agree it doesn't look like aiptasia. Seems to have a mat. Aiptasia in my experience just sporadically appears, or has a "footprint" breadcrumb like path of them.

I like them both. Some people hate them and some love them

Under my normal (non white) lights, they appear dark reddish with neon green centers.
Under white lights (like above), they are that greenish color.

I moved the coral to get a better picture and they "sucked in" to the rock, but came all out together after a few moments when the piece was settled down.

So I guess the question is: are you keeping your newfound sponges and star polyps?

Thanks vetteguy, but that white blob is actually a glue glob...I had a worm tube that I closed up, but only had the fragging glue to use, went a little heavy handed to make sure I closed it all up!

So I guess the question is: are you keeping your newfound sponges and star polyps?

If they aren't harmful (and not aiptasia), I'll keep 'em!!!
