I have this stuff growing in the fuge area of my sump. Some kind of macro algae? Maybe chaeto? I have never added anything. No lights down there. Just growing on its own.

Looks like chaeto to me.

Did you vinegar bathe or clean out the sump/returm pump? Might have still been in there from when I picked it up.

Nope. Wiped it down some and cleaned out the entrance and return area but left the sand and stuff in the middle part. I guess that is what it is. Maybe I should put some light down there and it will grow more.

A compact fluorescent in a clip-on work light, and you'll have a chaeto farm in no time... and pods for a Mandarin!

Funny you should say that. I was going to ask how long I should wait before getting a Mandarin? I have a lot of pods now. I go down at night sometimes and see them crawling all over the rock and everything I pick up off the bottom, has them on it. Any way to know exactly how good of a population of pods you have?

Depends on the size of your tank, age of the tank and other inhabitants of the tank that may also be consuming the pods. Most pods you see at night are the Amphipods, which most Mandarins don't eat. Nor do Mandarins eat after lights out. Amphipods eat Copepods and some Copepods are cannibles.
This is just one reason why it is very important to have a large mature tank to house a Mandarin. Sustainable food source :)

Its a 125 that has been running for about 3 months now. ~60% of the live rock came from a 4 year old tank along with most of the inhabitants and coral. Fish are chromis, lawnmower blenny, dragon goby, yellow tang, blue hippo, pair of clowns, aiptasia eating file fish, and a coral beauty. I am not going to get one now just curious as to recommended length to wait and a way to check population of pods.
