I am cycling my tank right now and noticed this white film/growth all over my live rock today. Anyone know what this is?

How long as the tank been cycling?
What did you use to seed the tank?

We used the live rock and water from the tank when we bought it (only had about 1/3 of the water) and the tank has been set up for about 2 weeks

Could possibly be some bacterial mass from some die off, or sponge. Sponge is harmless and if it's a bacterial mass it should resolve on it's own. One way to tell for sure is point some flow that direction or use a turkey baster. If the item blows off easily it's probably bacterial, if it stays in place it might be a sponge.

it does blow off with a bit of flow. got everything up and running last night and it seems to be going away. from my parameters does it seem like my tank is cycling ok?

Yup moving right along. :-)

Awesome! I was really worried that I was at a stand still. I don't know a lot about cycling....can you tell me what I should be looking for next?

Ammonia and nitrite will become undetectable. Sometimes a cycle stalls but that is not common (rectified by a simple water change). Once you reach 0 values for ammonia and nitrites ghost feed the tank some fish food and test the next day to see if the tank is adequately completing the nitrogen cycle in a timely manner. Depending on the nitrate level once the initial cycle is over you might want to do a 5-10% water change. Proceed slowly with stocking allowing the biological filter to adjust between fish introductions. Do not over feed. I always start with a few members of the clean up crew and see how they do for a week or two before proceeding to fish.

Thank you very much, that is incredibly helpful! so adding one or two of my crabs would be a good place to start once everything levels out? I am transferring everything from my 40gal to the new 210gl. Should I switch the corals in before the fish?

You're very welcome.

Sure crabs would be fine, you can feed them and that will help to maintain and grow the beneficial bacteria.

If they're hardy corals and not expensive sps and such than I would move them over first. The longer you can wait to move over the fish the better in my opinon. Corals you can tell quickly if they are stressed. Fish often show stress to a new system by the onset of Marine Ich and then that is just one more head ache to deal with.

Great! I was thinking of transferring some of my live rock in the 40 to the 210 today. The pieces that don't have corals on them. Will that take away from the natural filtration in my 40 gal though and upset the fish?

Just watch for stress, cut back on feedings and test for ammonia if indicated. You will be removing some of the biological filter thereby reducing the tanks ability to process the bi-products of metabolism (ammonia).

It's a lot easier to catch corals in a 210 gallon tank versus fish.

Congrats on your upgrade.
