From what I can make out in the photos they appear to be pineapple sponges.

Not unless they happen to grow on a coral, I have seen them actually try to choke out a pipe organ.
Usually they are the sign of a somewhat healthy tank..

Absolutely not very typical in a functioning tank. Good little filter feeders.

There are a few growing in my GSP frags

GSP, although beautiful it is a matting type coral and it will grow like a weed. I would keep it in an area all by itself so you can keep it in check...

It is segregated on its own structure away from contact of other rocks
