This algae is something I've never seen before! Its reddish and looks like a single long strand of hair. Its seems to be growing from bunches of normal green hair algae. Can somebody ID it for me? It also grows back remarkably fast :(

Hi

Not thinking Dino so much as some type of mucus/slime. Any corals in the area or snails in the tank?

Can you pull the strand out ? What does it feel like?

If it sticks together it's probably not dinos. Dinos would just turn to dust

Definitely dinos and most likely Ostreopsis but a look under a microscope would be needed to be sure. I am currently battling the same exact problem confirmed by microscope. What are the nitrate and phosphate numbers on your tank? Mine started after I began dosing Vibrant and my nutrients crashed to virtually undetectable levels. The smell is a dead give away and it is very distinct. The strands will stick together and if you suck them out with a little water they will break apart into dust when slightly agitated.

+1

I beat it before by following a regimen of 3-5 day blackouts, dosing MB7, Dino-X, and eventually adding a bio-pellet reactor. The bio-pellet reactor came with its own set of drawbacks. I’m currently using the Dr Tim’s method which is blackouts and dosing 2 different bacteria products, Re-fresh and Waste Away. In my opinion, the key to winning is patience and persistence. There are many different ways that people have beaten Dinos, but all of them don’t work on every tank. I’m in my second round of Dr Tim’s bacteria method and winning the battle. It’s getting better but not completely gone. I may possibly add a UV light if I need to go around one more time. Without knowing anything about your tank, it‘s hard to tell you what you should do. I may start dosing Nitrate and phosphate to my tank as well. Start with the tank parameters. Plenty of stuff to read about dinos on the board. One thing to remember is there is no magical fix to fix it fast. Patience and persistence.
