I was recently told these pop up because of TDS in RO/DI water. Is this true?

I have one in my tank as well and have heard mixed opinions.

They are often found in the cryptic areas of newer tanks, and do seem to like silicates in the water, but IMHO, they are a beneficial part of your clean up crew. Like many other things that "appear" in your tank, their population will wax and wane depending on nutrient supply

One of the better filter feeders you can have in the tank, the more the merrier - part of the natural biodiversity that contributes to stability and keeps up competition to keep bad filter feeders at bay
