Some detritivores may munch on it, but for the most part it is just broken down by bacteria and feeds the tank with nutrients.

Definitely snail poop. How’s the flow in your tank? When mine was minimal, I had it everywhere. Now that I’ve increased flow with a wavemaker, it is much less noticeable; going back into the water column and through filtration.
