When we purchased our setup, the original owner had told us he would help with setup/answer questions…

Well…it’s been months and we realized we never found out what this is‍♀️

Is it a UV Sterilizer?

Also, if it isn’t…should we purchase one?

Just so y’all know….we are so grateful for this reef community for always helping us!

Looks like it could be a UV sterilizer, is that power hanging for the unit? Also is this picture upside down? Otherwise he has the UV upside down and when you open it to change the bulb it's just going to spill everywhere...lol
It’s above the sump and has pipes connected to it going to the sump, also has a valve to it‍♀️
We’ve had the tank setup for about 8 months, whatever it is isn’t even plugged in
I may have another picture, if not I will take one soon as we get back home.

Definitely looks like one. I run a UV and think they are beneficial, it really is dependent on your system and what you plan on keeping. Is there a pump or does the drain pipe connect to it through that valve? Just trying to understand the plumping a bit

It’s setup to discharge into the pump basin and return to the sterilizer if that’s what it is and back

My husband said if the valve is open, it will go to the pump. We should be home in about 30 min I will take a better photo.
If it's unplugged and that screw on portion is on the top, unscrew and lift up. Chances are it'll look like a clear compact fluorescent bulb, if so then it's definitely a UV. Not sure what else it would be really lol

Oh my gosh….so we are home, I took this picture to show you and then my husband said “you’ve got to be kidding me, we’ve had this all this time!”
Then when he picked up the plug he said “look at what it says”

UV STERILIZER big letters

thank you so so much!

120g and 55g sump
Depending on how many watts that unit puts out I wouldn’t think it was big enough to do much more than make the water look clear . For your size tank I personally wouldn’t go less than 25 watts and would regulate the flow to pass thru it slower than what your return pump puts out . No more than turning your tank volume once or twice a hour which would be sufficient to kill algae and bad stuff in your water column .

ah dont turn it on outside of the water! lol At least not very long, could blow the bulb. Not that I've ever done that....lol
Thanks so much lol

Well we tried turning it all on but the plumbing the guy did isn’t right and it’s leaking so we will have to get what we need tomorrow so it won’t leak

O
