it is on a small piece of live rock, there appears to be a central stem in the animal that is black. It sticks up like a finger.

Hard to tell exactly from the picture, but it appears to be a soft coral. It is not aiptasia.

Looks like pulsing xenia but pic is very fuzzy. Other possibility is a macroalgae known as Rhodophyte

My vote is gorgonian, because of the black central stem. Many gorgonians leave a skeleton like this when they die.
