so I am thinking about my stocking list on my 18.5G AIO tank.

I thought it was going to be:
purple fire fish
yellow clown goby

and a bunch of inverts...but I am 2nd guessing the YCG as I hear they can mess with SPS. not sure I will have any but just in case tho...
I would like an open water swimmer to add movement and color to the tank.

so what are some of your fav. nano fish and why?

not sure if these count but these are the fish I like most that don't need a large tank
- mandarin fish (yes you can't sustain the pods In a small tank but that wasn't the question.... white worms or something)
- coral goby, they are just so small and so bright
- clownfish they come in so many different colours and patterns there is one for everyone

Tailspot blennies stay small and have a ton of personality. I also really like chromis because they are bright, active and peaceful (if you do get a chromis be sure to quarantine as they can carry uronema marinum which can lead to a full tank tear down to get rid of). Can never go wrong with a pair or single clownfish.

my kids called our yellow clown goby "acrokiller"
it's amazing, the amount of damage this little guy can do. maybe in a larger tank, he has more corals to bother, and spends less time with each one. but in a nano, if you have any SPS, don't do it.

not a lot of nano swimmers.

some of the fish i keep or kept in my nanos

- firefish, swims out in the open when comfortable, will jump into the rockwork every time someone scares it.

- percula or ocellaris clows are always in the open.

- pygmy wrasse, kinda patrols the rocks for food. mostly when the lights are not too bright.

- tailspot blenny, mine starved as my tank didn't grow enough algae at one point, and he didn't eat much of the food that got fed to the tank.

- rainfords gobie, suffered the same fate as the tailspot, slowly starved over time. i never saw it eat any food put into the tank. it needs to hunt for algae and other microorganisms. needs a larger tank i think.

- neon gobie, spends some of its time swimming around, some of it hiding :)

- trimma gobies, cute little things. don't do a lot of swimming, mostly perching. maybe because i have no sandbed?

- barnacle blenny, these little guys are tons of fun. you will only see them at feeding time.
mine ended up crispy on the floor though.

- royal gramma, can be somewhat of a tank bully...

i've been thinking of getting some of the nano cardinals (not the banggai or pajamas) if i can find them.

I love LOVE LOVE mandarins hands down my fav. SW fish and that a very hard list to be on top. I did think about one with a paul B feeder and hatching BBS and feed back worms. but in then I am afraid of it passing as I love the little guys to much. maybe i'll tyr it in the RS 750...

even tho this is a RFA nem tank not sure I want a clown.

Another vote for tailspot blennies

I do love tail spots there on the short list but not much of a open water swimmer. when I had a 20L macro tank the fire fish and banggi never really came out but then I moved them over to a 40BR with other fish they swam all around the tank and seemed more comfortable and happy. so that kinda why I am looking for a fish to make the fire fish feel comfortable.

I thought a royal gramma would be to big for a 18.5 gal tank? it's on the stocking list for the 750 so i think i'll keep it there with the wrasses :D

rainford gobie is on the short list as well. bummer to hear that yours did not to well.

yup fire fish is on the list. only one I have picker out..

Tailspot blenny and canary blenny.

Tailspots are funny fish.

Canarys are funny and super active. They cruise every level of the tank, stop, look at you all weird move some and repeat lol.

I was thinking of the canary, I had one a few years ago loved it. nice yellow color but LA states 30 gal min, guess it would be out in a 24x 14 tank?

My favorites in my 29 gallon were the purple firefish and bicolor blenny, both had LOTS of personality

Does anyone have experience with these fish?

~pink streak wrasse? are they cryptic hide most of the time or are thy out and about cursing the tank?

~mini dart goby Aioliops megastigma a school of 4 of these guys could be fun.

Pink-streaked wrasse

Took awhile for moment for mine to warm up. Now cruises the tank picking at rocks most of the day.

Hector's Goby. Cool little guy is an open swimmer will pick at your sand and any hair algae.

@Devaji Tailspots are very much open swimmers with small peaceful tank mates.
