What is your process to change filter socks?

What is yalls process to change filter socks?

I ask as if I let my system run while changing socks it messes everything up with the water level.

Im considering doing away with them totally as they are a PITA

Ideally every 3 days before organics is broken down or filter sock gets clogged. It sure is a PITA! I removed the socks and added a Reefmat filter roller...problem solved.

Switched to these short, 3D printed filter cups instead. 15 seconds to change out a small piece of filter floss every week. Game changer!

I do the same, every 3 days. I bought around 12 socks so that I only have to clean them once a month or so. I had the Klir roller mat, but it let way too much junk through and never made a good seal in the sump it was built for.

I guess what im trying to say is do you all turn your return pump off to change out the socks or keep everything running?

I don’t turn off my return pump. I just pull out the old sock, squeeze out the excess water, then put in the new sock. It adds a little bit to the water volume, but that usually evaporates and the water level is back to where it was. It is not enough to affect anything IMO.

My ato goes crazy when i take out the sock. The water level in my return goes way down. Like an inch.

I have 14 socks and change every few days. Just toss them in a 5 gallon bucket with bleach. When I'm down to 2 socks I wash the rest of them in the washer several times to make sure bleach is out. Not a big deal to me

Pump on usually as the socks being in or out don't make any difference to the return level in my RSR 425. Typically I'll pull them out every fortnight during a water change BUT, I use floss on top which is rotated every few days and eventually changed. The socks rarely see much debris.

Oh man I do not have that type of issue, my ato kicks on for a few seconds. I pull out the sock slowly so that the water level is less affected. Then I quickly squeeze the excess water out of the sock to keep as much of it in the sump as possible.

Is this on thingy? I have printed out two other full size cups and they were not that great. I need solid .stl
These are so much easier to deal with than socks.

This looks pretty awesome! Any information on where to source these would be much appreciated.

I use a Kamoer Pro dosing pump for my ATO. It replenishes a certain amount four times per day and does a very nice job. Neptune water level sensor will turn it off once if it gets too high.

I do not turn off the pump when I change out socks, which is about every three days for me.

Leave pumps running. I use this + filter floss. Easy, disposable every week/two — I bought 25lbs of it from craft stores way back. Do not get them with flame retardant materials.

Also, throw your (disposable) carbon nylon bag into this chamber as a bonus! I will never go back to socks :)

As my sock starts to fill, I pull it and replace with another(s) immediateky. No issues and cant do without my socks. They trap so much waste
