What kind of algae is this ?

The best way I can describe it, film algae?

For some reason it only grows around this OG Bounce frag I got from BSA. Not sure why. It happened while it was on the magnetic frag rack on the glass. The algae would completely take hold of everything around the frag. It blows off with a coral feeder tool/turkey baser.

Moved it to the sand bed, same thing.


Any ideas what would be the best solution to this?

It didn’t look like it blew off the sand but rather to have glued the sand grains together. Cyanobacteria does that as does filamentous algae. Does the frag look healthy?

It's definitely harder to blow off in the sand, since it sticks to the sand making the sand clumpy. But it definitely blows off, when it was on the plug it would completely get covered in the stuff. I would blow it off once every couple of weeks, usually how long it took to get bad.

The next candidate is an algae that swims. These may settle but don’t attach firmly to the surface. If they are accumulating around the plug, what’s attracting them? Are they doing any harm?

This sounds a bit more like it. Now that I think about it, I have seen it in other places as well. I have seen it the rock before in really low flow areas.

Not sure if it's doing harm, but it's not doing any good. I would say low flow attracts it, but the shroom is now in the sand bed getting more flow then before. Yet it's still happening.


This is a really low flow setup. No wavemaker just an upgraded pump and a RFG on a water box 10g cube. Could this be a flow issue?

Bump, still don't know what it is or what I can do about it.

Looks like green cyano to me. Cyano will make air bubbles similar to Dino’s.

I did not even know these were a thing. I do have some chemi clean. Might try a round to see if that clears it out

That looks like GHA to me, I also have some of this in my 20 G tank

Ok,thank you for your feedback.It appeared after I had an issue with filtration and my NO3 and PO4 rised.Now I am bringing it back low like before and for now I used toothbrush to scrape the algae off the rock.Lets see…
