Phosguard isn't gfo. Maybe you're thinking of phosban? Which is synthetic gfo if I'm not mistaken.

Yes it's alum oxide rather than ferric oxide.
Either way it's a phosphate binder

Well I ended up just leaving the GFO in that I have now and the phosphorous meter said it's down to 13ppb so that's good news. Also added a couple Mexican turbos and they're eating the algae so that's good hopefully the rocks stop leaching soon and i can get it all inder control

The "alga" is most likely the cyanobacterium Schizothrix.
In my experience phosphate removal doesn't help. Schizothrix can be removed with a hose during water changes and stays away after doing this a few times.

The algae does not come off the rock at all when I try to siphion.

Looks like the hydroids that I have in my tank. Kalk paste does the trick for me. I thought it was algae at first also but if you look really really close they are polyp like, almost like zoas. Google hydroids and you will see what I'm talking about.

That's a good thought but I have Mexican turbos in there and they are eating it. Not sure if they would eat hydroids?
