I will actually recommend this fixture if you can find a 48". I have been using the 24" version for 3 years with no problems at all. I used the 36" for 2 years with no problems at all.

I have the 48" one and it works amazing I'm currently changing to ati bulbs color looks amazing now

They're good fixtures for sure. I put all ati bulbs in mine and couldn't be happier. The only thing they could improve on would be reflectors because they're not the best. But for a 55 gallon the 6 bulb will be plenty of light to keep anything.

Yes, ATI make great bulbs. As for an 8 bulb configuration I would do Blue+, Coral+, Blue+, Purple+, Coral+, Blue+, Coral+, Purple +... I only have a 4 bulb, but I believe that will give you a nice pop of most colors.
