What meds or dips should I always have around ?

Hello guys,

About to mail order some salifert tests for more brand new pico and wondered if there were any meds or dips etc that you guys always recommend having around in the case of an emergency.

To put in perspective, the closest LFS that stocks saltwater aquarium items is about 200 miles away so it's not always easy to grab a particular item at the drop of a hat.

What's in your coral emergency kits at home?

Jay covered fish meds pretty well, in terms of coral the four basics I'd say would be iodine, Bayers, Coral RX, and
H2O2.

Some people have used antibiotics on coral but I never have. I've heard it's useful for anemones though. Don't use copper on corals tho haha.

Define "emergency"?

If a fish is sick, any meds or dips are just going to stress it more.

I always just keep enough RODI water on hand to do a solid 75% water change

Not really true, a fish with flukes or velvet can get much needed relief through use of a freshwater dip. Other dips, like with ruby rally reef pro, can also help, though I've never personally done one.

@Jay Hemdal- corals got me back in the hobby for sure, but I do have a wild caught juvenile beau gregory from a tide pool in the evo.... his attitude is endearing, lol. He's quickly realised that the tank is his, not mine

Jay, wanted to circle back to this thread and get your take. Since Gen Cure has both Metro and Prazi as their key ingredients, do you feel that getting individual supplements of both is required? Also, how are metro and kanaplex different?

Although metronidazole is supposed to have some antibiotic activity, Kanaplex, being kanamycin is a better broad spectrum, gram negative antibiotic. I use General Cure for people who otherwise would not have access to metronidazole. That can be helpful with internal protozoan issues that Prazipro won't cover.
