what needs to be monitored

Could someone list every single thing in a tank that should be monitored (ex. phosphate, calcium, pH) and the best way to measure them?

It depends on what you're trying to grow. For my mixed reef I monitor alk, salinity, mag, nitrate, calcium, and phosphate. All by manual tests Salifert and api. It has been running almost a year with few losses. And most of my losses have been a total mystery. There may be more you want to watch, again, depending on what you want to achieve.
