My friend of mine wanted to get a bigger tank went from a 40 gal with a sump to a 75 with a sump. He reused all of this water and live rock but thought it would be a great idea to put everything in the new tank all at once. Unfortunately this might just lead to a crash. Don’t do this lol

Why should this lead to crash? That´s the way I always have done when I have upgraded - clean the sand a little before I put it in my new tank and after that fill up with the old water - followed of new water. In this case - it will be like a 40 % WC.

Sincerely Lasse

Spend a few days vacuuming sand if you are concerned about migrating the detritus. Then transfer, turn up the skimmer to a wet skim and water should clear within a few hours.

Agreed. If he did it correctly it shouldn't crash. It may cause a small imbalance of nutrients but the beneficial bacteria is all in the rocks and sand. The sand plays a huge role so it could all depend on whether or not he rinsed the sand too.
