They're old fashioned dinosaur technology, but for a small tank like a 55 gal on a budget, I'd be tempted to use a few Italian made MJ1200 pumps.

53$ to 200$ BUT 80$ you can get 1200gph of flow. I spent 50 and got 520gph of flow in a 15g tank. Super compact too
