What Pump Should I use for 5 gallon Sump?

Hey guys,

Just wondering what I should go with if I'm using a eshopps nano overflow box: an eheim compact pump (model 600 with max flow of 160 gph) or go with something like a hydor centrifugal pump with a max of 200 and lower the flow setting. Since the sump is 5 gallons I was looking at compact models.
The sump I'm making myself will mainly be a refugium for a 10 gallon nano tank.

The Nano is capable of 200gph overflow, what ever pump you get, you'd just need to match or keep just below that number after head loss.
The headloss of the Hydor is only 16", so its not putting out alot of flow with any kind of height.
The Eheim has a head loss of 4.4', but its max flow of 160gph is at 0' of head loss.
You need to be looking at something else.

I don't have the cabinet finished yet, but I'm guessing the height will be around 13 1/2 inches, give or take an inch (estimating top of display tank to top of sump.)
Not sure if or how this would affect things, but the cabinet will be off to the side of the dresser the 10 gallon is sitting on, almost 2 feet away, but I can definitely slide the tank over a bit more so there will only be about a foot or less. In the future I will build something that will go directly over the cabinet for the 10 gallon to sit on, right above the sump.
I could definitely go with the Eheim 1000 if that would work based on the info I just provided and the changes I'll be making to the setup in the future.

Gotta rethink it, your talking about 24" of line, then going up 13". Gonna have to get a bigger pump.
Your looking at something like the Mag 9.5.

I can actually easily move the tank to the opposite edge of the furniture, adding only another inch or so to the 13"-14" it has to clear.
Would the eheim 1000 still be suitable for this? Sorry if I'm bombarding you. I really appreciate the help!

seriously a mag 9.5 that would be almost as big as the 5gal tank.
I run very little turn over on my system. I have a 1" bulkhead with an overflow rated for 700gph. I only run a Rio 800 plus pump that is pumping 44" total from sump to top of my 40breeder. its a VERY small pump i mean probably only about the size of the wetside of a vortech MP40. I am guessing after headloss I am pushing about 70-80gph but thats fine with me I dont want water rushing through my sump and not have time for the skimmer to clean it. Jeff Macare at reef dynamics said you want very little turnover for it like 2-3x of display. I wouldnt worry about how much flow you get out of sump pump as long as its turning over the water. The pump in your display should be only thing you wanna worry about for flow.

What pump would you use for 3' of Head Loss to get 200gph?

Rio plus 1100 give about 230 at 3ft and they are much less expensive then mag drive and so much less noise. I had a mag 5 once. Never again to much noise and vibration

Or quite one 1200. It's 196 at 3 feet and I had them in past also very quiet and inexpensive

I serviced tank and my complaint of quiet one pumps was they tended to quit around 2 years and the company often reconfigured the input and output so that the hard plumbing had to be redone! Uhhg, it was infuriating.

For $30 if it failed after 2 years I wouldn't be super mad.
