I dont really have a reasoning other than it being a perfectly good number to use and have had success that way no reason to change .

I keep 1.026 (35ppt).

1.0255-1.0265 (roughly 34.5-35ppm). I am not currently using an ATO (though I have a couple different ones I could hook up if I wanted to), but I am using a glass lid, so my evaporation is maybe 1/3 - 1/2 gallon a week (on a 28g tank), so I just keep an eye on where the water line is in my return chamber and add some water when it’s gone down an inch or so (which usually mean I top-off around twice a week). The fluctuation is never more than 0.5ppm.
