What salt are you using?

Here you go Randy, right off the bucket. Been using this for years and i had a lengthy conversation with a rep at reefapalooza and he confirmed.

Well, I'm guessing no one aerates their salt as they mix it, which I'm guessing they mean mixing air in with the water as it mixes? So like... dropping airstones into the bucket while you mix? I'm not sure, just guessing here. :p

Exactly right. I spoke to a rep and we were talking about if I ever had trouble with the salt mixing cloudy and I said no, I follow the directions. Lol. He thought it was funny. I had one instance where I didn't let the RODI cool before I mixed it, I keep my storage in the garage, and it was hazy so as long as you follow the directions it mixes clear. I can verify that after many years of consistent use

There
Wait, hotsalt is made by ATM, the people from the show tanked? That alone is going to be a negative for a lot of people.

There is an awesome scientist with R&D behind the products of ATM. Yeah its the guys from the show but they have some huge talent behind their products. I used ATM colony when i started the reefer 525. I swear I tested like crazy and I never saw any trace of NH3. I agree the name had me skeptical too. The salt has some solid data backing it up.

Where can we see the data? Who is the scientist? Was the data done by a 3rd party?

I use Red Sea blue bucket and regular instant ocean and love it. It does leave a weird brown film in the bucket but haven’t seen negative effects from it.

Just curious if anyone else alternates what salt they use?

Topic Marin Pro works great for me. It is pricey but I only have a 30 breeder and I buy the large 4 or 5 gallon bucket once a year so it's not bad for me. I had larger tanks 135 and a 120 and ran the same salts the are mentioned above. I didnt care for them so I just stayed with the salt that works me.

Does anyone have a problem with using both RSCP and Blue Bucket in a 50/50 ratio to get the ALK down a bit and keep the other parameters in line as well? I mix 5 gallons per week for my 45 gallon mixed reef tank. My ALK usually stays between 9 and 10 but I also add about 10ml of the ALK half of the Bionic 2 part system per 5 gallons of top off water.............I dose the Calcium part directly into the tank. I have used RSCP exclusively since starting the tank about 20 months ago. Just thinking about trying the combo to moderate the levels..................

Honestly since your only changing 5 gallons I'd stay with the coral pro. You still have to dose as it is. I have a 75 and I've used RSCP from the beggining. I keep the alk at 9 and I change 15 gallons a week. On the night I do a water change I don't dose and the alk stays where I need it. After that I dose 20ml of alk day and night. I think you would be fine staying with the coral pro.

OK, I see it, and think it a ridiculous direction.

Short of a special setup where there is zero air above the water, I can't see how one could mix it without aeration, and see no no reason to want that to be the case anyway. Their video shows mixing in open air.

Can you think of any reason why you would want to prevent aeration when mixing?

Maybe it is a translation issue and they mean something else.

In fact, Red Sea states on the same container to stir until the pH stabilizes. THat happens by aeration.

Stable pH is the clearest sign that aeration is likely complete.

The rep stated adding air stones to the water is not reccomended, not sure. I've just never had an issue with it mixing as long as the water is cool. Parameters always have been spot on too. Gotta stay with what works. Lol

Your not supposed to aerate red sea at all, max mixing time is also not supposed to exceed 4 hours. Red sea has been the easiest mixing salt I've ever used.
Never heard of not aerating salt, but after reading bucket, it says that. Been aerating my salt for for over 25 years, with other brands. Like I said I will stick with HW-Marinemix, never has failed me once. Mixes clean and aerates in less than an hour. Thanks for pointing that out. I bet a lot of people didn’t read the bucket, cause I sure didn’t

Jason played mythbusters with their video that claimed to show rapid precipitation on continued mixing. He didn't find what they showed, others do, but it clearly does not always happen:

Still clear. Bumping to 115F"

I am tired of Fritz consistently being different in each batch.
Up until now it has been solid for me. My box I just opened, the paramaters are way off. So is my other box I have, tested it as well. Seems like their QC went down. I might be going back to IO. At least IO is consistently inconsistent lol. The mag on my one box of fritz is 1600 according to salifert!
