So I have been busy looking at colleges as my junior year in high school is coming to an end. I have a 75 gallon that my parents are not able to look after while I am gone. I will be 2 1/2 hours away and won't have a car to come home incase of an emergency. Now my question is, the tank will be coming down, that is for sure happening. I would however like to keep my clown that I have right now and do a nano tank like a nuvo 16 or something small. All that would be in it would be zoas and mushrooms to keep it easy and to lower the amount of possible problems.

Do you think I should take down the 75 now and start up the nano or should I wait till next summer to take it down. I don't think it makes a ton of sense to continue putting in as much money as I am for the 75 when I could just be putting that money towards college. Does that make sense? I would still have expenses for the nano but they wouldn't be nearly as high as they would be now.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Connor

To save money it would be best to set up the nano now using stuff from the 75. That way you'll be able to save money on the expenses (water / salt, etc) on the 75. Moving the nano should be pretty simple since process.

Connor you sound like youve got a plan and are thinking sensible. I'd go ahead sell everything I could. Get the nano up and running, looking good. Then study hard so you can make lots of money and have a big reef after school. Good Luck

Ok thank you for the replies! Now here is my other question, with my parents having to watch over this while I'm gone, I want to keep it very very simple. Just the tank, some lr, sand, skimmer, a clown that I have right now, and maybe a shrimp goby pair. Maybe do a tank full of zoas and mushrooms so nothing too complicated. But I don't want them having to do wc every week. Is there a way around that? I plan on feeding mainly pellets, is that possible to not have to do a wc every week?

It isn't possible to take the Nani with you to school? Assuming you will be in a dorm... Some schools will give permission to have a tank. In the request letter you can explain to them how much you have learned from your tank, the care and responsibility you have put into it... Another thought is to sell everything and put the money toward a car. I know I've put enough money into my 90 gallon to buy a decent used sedan. Good luck!

I agree with others, take down the 75 now and sell what you can and start up the nano now. I think the smaller the tank, the more chances for problems if regular maintenance isn't done. I would try and take it with you to college. You're going to need as much money as possible for college! trust me :)

Is there anything I can do to the tank to make the maintenance easier?

I'd add an ATO / resivoir to help insure your salinity doesn't tank which is easy for it to do in a nano.

Unless you're coming home each week, leaving it at home doesn't make sense.

Either A) Break it down.... or B) Set up a small nano for your dorm/appt.
