Can I am getting my sump up and running this weekend. I am using a sock for the filter and putting my skimmer in the sump. I am also putting some live rock in there and what else should I put in the sump.

How about a return pump to get the water back to the DT? hehe. Also, put your heater(s) in the sump. If you have baffles to separate stuff, such as a refugium, then add some Chaeto with a light.

how soon after adding water to a tank do you add cheato? I to am about to get my sump up and running and tank plumbed and was wondering when is the right time to add cheato

IMHO add chaeto as the very first thing after adding the water.

also add chaeto to the sump.

Which is better sand or crush coral. I am running crush coral in my tank

You really don't need a filter sock and some argue should not have one. I use one when I first set up a tank to collect all of the rock and sand dust but then remove it. It is the same as running a canister filter it collects ditreus and promotes high nitrates. If you have an abundance of garbage where your overflows exits to the sump just siphon it out with your water changes.

Filter socks work well if changed frequently.

Another option is to have no live rock and no sand. This makes it easy to keep the sump clean, in my opinion anything else in there just creates a nutrient trap. I run a powerhead in my sump to keep detritus in suspension.

I agree with getting rid of crushed coral, in the tank and sump. Also, please research deep sand beds before adding one. They can kill a tank just as easily as helping it, even more so. In my sump I have all my equipment and in the refugium section I have a few pieces of live rock with a bit of rubble and cheato, thats it.

It is a 30g sump here is a pic of it

IMO it is not big enough for a DSB, cheato with live rocks might work or if this was mine I would just put a bio pellet reactor along with a GFO reactor.
