Yea, Dry rock, and live sand, but I dont think live sand really did anything. Thanks, ill check that outDry rock or live rock? Dry I assume..
I tried to establish every level in the food chain for my tank. Especially phyto and copepods. I'm about 11 months into my tank and never really had an ugly phase.

If you want this, then you absolutely need to start with live ocean rock or rock from an established tank. If you start with dry rock, I can guarantee you will see uglies.I want to try to avoid all the uglies
What kind of dry rock did you use?Yea, Dry rock, and live sand, but I dont think live sand really did anything. Thanks, ill check that out
Rock that used to be in a tank but its all dried out, I did do a one-week bleach cure about 3 months ago. The rock was from a previous owner who said he got it from Florida, so it is technically real rock. I got all my stuff used from him and it seems like its been sitting in his basement for a while, he gave us a half empty bucket of salt dated 2014What kind of dry rock did you use?
I don't think that's necessarily true across the board. The article I linked above is a great way to avoid the uglies. It's the process I used to start my tank and I had no ugly stage. But I added all of the various cleanup crews from phyto to copepods to tiny ceriths to larger astrea snails etc up to a bristletooth tang fairly early onIf you want this, then you absolutely need to start with live ocean rock or rock from an established tank. As long as the rock is very porous you should be ok. I would follow @Gribbles advice and include some tuxedo urchins. Keep the lights off or very low. Regular water changes and lots of patience. I had very minor ugly stage but my tank is exposed to natural light from large windows. I do not recommend using chemicals. Good luck.
