what size pump you think?

Hey All ..

So what size pump you think I should use for this?

I am going to have a 2 little fishes phosban reactor running rox carbon. The reactor will hang on the side of the sump (55 gallon) while the pump will be placed in the sump. (So the reactor will be higher then the pump .. about 1 foot I would say) So I want to make sure I don't get TOO WEAK of a pump that does not move the water up to the top of the reactor ..but I also want the water to run thru their nice and slow.

Find on online a head loss calculator and look at the min you would need. Go from there. The reactor manufacturer should also shed some light on the subject too.
I'd guess 200 300 gph. .

But I'm not familiar with your carbon and what your trying to accomplish.

There is a 1200 gph variable by Jaebo that's dc. Sicce? Also makes one. Unfortunately I dont know of a dc 600 gph variable because that would be the safe bet.
 
Is there anyway u could make a manifold off of ur return pump?
 
If not carbon does not have to be tumbled like phosban so u only need like 100 gph going thru it if I recall correctly Maby even less
 
Also I beleive two little fishies recomends a maxi jet 1200 and dial it back to ur liking but the easies way would be a manifold

Yup. Exactly. I was guessing a 200 gph pump with head loss of the tube and reactor. I'd still choke it or go dc.
 
A Cobalt Maxi Jet 1200 with a 3/4" Valve for adjusting flow ( at input or output your choice ). You may want to rethink using Rox in that reactor as the Carbon is very small and since you have to use so little of Rox Carbon it will blow around with very little water flow and most likely straight out to your sump. You will have to add some Floss at bottom and top of Carbon and if you do the chances are it will clog way before the Carbon is exhausted and then will be wasted because you have to change the Floss. You would be better of using something like Seachem Matrix Carbon or Two little fishies Hydrocarbon 2 ( great Carbon ) or you could save a few bucks and use Fluval Carbon another great carbon but much cheaper.

Then what about this ...---> simply putting the rox carbon in a filter type media bag and place that in the return chamber of my sump? Would that work? Or am I better off running it thru a reactor?

Is there going to be that much of a difference in water quality by using a carbon other then the Rox? ( I was just wanting to use that because I heard how great it is and the difference it does indeed make)

After all I was going to buy the 2 little fishies reactor ... so if simply putting the carbon in a filter media bag in my sump will work, I will save about $50 by not having to buy the reactor and another $20 on a pump (average depending on the pump brand) $70 total!

But again... I want to do the most effective way so if putting the carbon in a reactor is the best way, then I am going to do that. But if it will still clear up the water, then I am going to get some Rox and throw it in a media bag in the sump

Rox is a very aggressive Carbon and if you use to much believe me your tank will let you know. Yes all Carbon can be used by placing in a Filter media bag and in high flow area of your sump ( passive ) as not all water is forced over the Carbon, this means it will not work as fast but will have the same end result. I have read a report where they tested length in time to amount of coloring removed, and the interesting part was that if the Carbon was used in a reactor or just placed in the sump the end results where the same but the length in time was quite different. Where the reactor was hrs. the Bag in the sump was days which can be a positive thing as like they say " nothing good happens fast in this hobby ". Flow thru the Carbon is another thing, if using a reactor, you want a flow rate of 45 to 75 gal max thru the Carbon as it has been shown that at this flow the most amount of material is removed in one single pass which just means getting the most out of the Carbon.
You may want to pick up the reactor anyhow as at some point you may need to run some GFO and you need the reactor for that.
 
You do NOT want carbon to tumble or move around at all. I have reactors up the yin yang, and I choose to run ROX carbon in a bag in the sump because it is so small and lightweight that it tumbles in a reactor. Imo, the best area to put the carbon is often in the overflow box because carbon really should be placed in front of your filter pads and skimmer so that there is less likelihood of carbon dust making it into the display tank where it can cause HLLE.
