What is the general rule of thumb for choosing what size return pump to use. I am piecing together equipment for a 150 gal build, 60x24x24.

I have read that you should take your tank volume and multiply it by 10, and shoot for that flow.
Another thing to consider is the size of your sump. The smaller the sump, the smaller the volume of water per time you'll want to push through it.

+1 I have a mag 7 on my 75 gallon

it depends on what you will be keeping and how your sump is setup and with what equipment

I like to have lower flow threw my sump so my equipment....... spends more time polishing the water

I have a rio 26hf on my 180g with 4'-5' head

I have a mag 7 on my biocube 29. From the sump that is. It's not too strong either but it is part of my water mover. If you have other water moving methods then you don't need a super huge return.

So if I had a 55gl display tank and a 55gl sump in the basement what size pump would I need for a 6-7 foot run?

I would go with an external pump like a gen-x, reeflo, blueline all decent pumps but even the pump I use would work for a 55 at that height (rio hf 26)
