I've got a 75 gallon tank that I need to buy a sump for. It's going to house my skimmer, heater, and return pump. Nothing crazy. Is a 30 gallon sump too much or could I go smaller? Or is this really just a preference thing?

I suggest the biggest one you can fit. Allows for extra equipment in the future as well as a refugium (which I strongly reccomend). The extra water volume is always nice too!

As much sump as you can afford and fit in the space you have.
Larger sumps give you more total water volume.

I think it's a little small, but it will certainly work and is very pretty. At your stage I would just use a cheap tank from PetsMart. Make sure you check the base (foot print) size before you buy a skimmer or what not, if you are going to fit it inside the sump.
