What size tank should a beginner get?

Thx I'm def going to do it, the more I talk about it the more convinced the wife is becoming, I'm starting to win this battle w/ everyone's help... I'll make sure to post my starter kit once I get it up and running

Check out Manhattanreefs.com It's a local forum in our area. I am not sure where you are in CT but there are members on that forum. You might be able to score yourself a used setup that is in great condition for a fraction of the price. Just try to avoid the bad eggs on there.. for the most part I avoid going on that forum regularly and visit here on R2R.

By the way.. Welcome to R2R!

I strongly second this. On my local boards someone is always selling out of the hobby and can get some really nice deals on some really nice equipment.

I'll also second that you should go as big as space and wallet will allow. More water volume equals more stability which overall will give you the greatest chance at success.

My final point is to consider the system and not just the tank. By system I mean your RODI unit and water change set up. IMO weekly water changes are very important and making them as easy as possible from the start will greatly help to ensure that you will continue to do them long term.

Best of luck in your decision and a good start posting here looking for advice!

As to a min. size to start, A 29Gal. Other wise I would not go bigger than 150g. As you go bigger in saltwater, so does maintance costs etc. I have FW: 10 and 29g. Sw: 45G fish only and 75G reef. Good luck

I know starting up our tank has brought my girlfriend and I much closer. We spend tons of time together watching the tank, talking about livestock, and visiting fish stores.
