I agree with everyone on here that says a 30 gallon or even bigger is better for a beginner to start off with. this is just because there is more water to buffer the mistakes that will be made. But, with all that said it all depends of you! if your someone who doesn't mind investing about 15min a day into your tank then you'll be fine with a small tank. I started with a 30, had it for a year and lost it to red slime that i thought i had control over, clearly i didn't!! No matter the size i would say that there are three things that need to be followed for any size take. 1.) water changes every week on a schedule that is like a religion!!! 2.) flow is the most important thing about your tank!! don't blast it all apart with to much and never go into a fight under gunned. 3.) Let things do there thing man! you can't control it all and sometimes patients and some time for a balance to form is all that is need.
And whatever you do, have fun!!!! if your not enjoying it, then there is no sense in doing it!!
