Help needed guys I have changed my mind on this topic so many times, and still not certain about what skimmer to run on my system, which is around a total of 840 Gals.

The brain fart so far has been, and I assure you I have thought of may skimmers in between like, Eshopps, Bashsea, Bubble Magnus, Microbe lift which is knock for something else, and the list goes on.

2 x Red Sea 900 which are good for 475 gal each a total of 950 gal a buffer of about 100 gal in Australian dollars for the two is $1460.00

1 x NYOS 300 which good for 1050 gal that gives me a 200 gal buffer which would help if I wanted to run another system like a frag tank anemone tank or mangrove tank that sells down under for $1930.00

But the best bang for buck seems to be 2 x Tunze Master Doc Skimmers 9430 which according to the marketing department would give me a total skimming capability of 1580 gal that’s nearly double my tank for a grand total of $2200.00

I must say the only thing I don't like about the Tunze is there no auto stop when the cup is full and a drain hose for the cup it self

what do you guys think

I would contact Royal Exclusiv USA

And ask about this model

Do not size up with a BK skimmer.

I looked at Lifereef was advise work very well yet very noisy? I was looking at 2 x SVS3-30 IN-SUMP

I have a lifereef on my reefer 350 and I have no complaints about anything especially the noise. I am running a DC pump on it so maybe that is why I dont hear it that much.

I’m not a huge fan of expensive equipment that’s at best can only remove 30% nutrients myself. This is old school imop and I think a better investment would be large quality scrubber with cheto fuge. Based on what your considering doing cost wise you can achieve 100% nutrient reduction for same cost with properly sizing each and supplying proper lighting and likely still come out a few dollars ahead in the end.

Tbh I’m not a huge fan of scrubbers on reef tanks as they are just as much maintenance as a skimmer and typically choose cheato fuge 100% over both. But on a system that large and when considering running two skimmer anyways I see this a mute point. A scrubber will remove all the nutrients you want with proper flow and lighting and the cheato fuge it drains into will keep the system more stable after cleanings of the scrubber.

There just is no substitute for nature that manufacturing and science can come close to matching. On something this big I would prob still run a skimmer cause it can’t hurt and would wet skim like crazy with a snallwr skimmer is hike using s fuge and scrubber. End result being the wet skin would be like a slow water change for the system.. I can see this making for a zero true WC setup short and long term only having to top off fresh and a little salt at same time to keel chemistry right. Shouldn’t take more then few weeks and little math to get dialed in.

The lifereef that I have has the air intake come from the collection cup. It is pretty quiet.

The 30% stuff from Fledman has a lot of basic flaws and assumptions that probably do not play out in a tank. Even if that is right, that is TOC and everybody forgets to mention that a skimmer can get nearly 100% of the organic protein before it can be measured in TOC. A skimmer is a pretty effective piece of equipment... besides I use 3 on my acropora tank, so that means that I get 90% of the TOC.

Chaeto/fuge and a skimmer are not mutually exclusive. They do different things. Usually a good idea to have both, if you need them.

Here is my sump, first section is four 4 inch filter socks, then a section for mechanical filters, skimmers, a calcium reactors. Next section is for natural filters a Cheto fuge even toying with the good ole miracle mud. I have BRS media reactors for carbon and GFO. A UV filter to help with nuisance Algae. The last section of my sump is a frag tank the sump is 8x2x2
