WHAT TANG

I am trying to decide what tang I want to get and could use some help. I have a 75 mixed reef. I know its small but any tang I plan on buying will be at small size and once its to big i have a lightly stocked 220 that it will move to. Right now I have a large scopas tang that is getting close to moving to the bigger tank and would like to replace him with something that has some more color.

Currently looking at a small gold rim tang but open to suggestions. I do keep mushrooms, lps, and sps so something that is less likely to nip.

I have same size tank and put in a small purple tang, have had him for 2 years now. healthy and fat!

Since you are planning to move to a 220, any tang would be fine short term except for sohal, clown, unicorn, or vlamingii. They get so aggressive and big I don’t think even a 220 is big enough for them.

I took in a rehomed vlamingii, and at 14" it was even too much fish for my 450.

a unicorn is the only one of those that I would want anyway lol. im pretty sure ill go with the gold rim. I did se a gold rim blue powder hybrid online that was gorgeous but finding that in small might be hard

If you want to keep one long term look for any Ctenochaetus tang (Bristletooth). That would mean you're looking for Tomini, Kole, Chevron, etc....

You could probably get away with a Zebrasoma (Yellow, Purple, Gem, Black, etc...) but a Sailfin would get too big.

they will be kept long term but will go into a 220 after growing out the 75. The 220 is very lightly stocked with fish so shouldn't be a problem for most tangs.

more or so looking for opinions on temperament and reef safeness as well as it hopefully being somewhat a slow grower so it can stay in the 75 longer

Personally, I would just stick it in the 220. Each transfer is stressful for both the owner and the fish.

totally understandable but I do like a tang in the 75 as part of a cleanup and my scopas is getting to big so I do need to replace. the 75 and 220 is the same water being made and all params are the same so the stress should be minor

I'm pretty sure most if not all Tangs are reef safe....unless they break stuff during a dash....

I like the gold rim idea, or any of the Acanthurus. I just like the way they look. Kole tangs are a good choice as well for clean up purposes, and as an added bonus, they won't get too big for your 75.

I had never saw the gold rim before today and its gorgeous. just finding any tang in the small range to start is hard unless you go for the ones that stay somewhat small. Id like to get a small tang then eventually gets big so it can go in the 220
