It’s the smallest of the Foxfaces and the only one I’d consider until I get a 6+ foot tank (if I ever will). I have scrapped the idea of ever having a Pinecone Fish. If I get a second larger fish (with the first being the Marine Betta) it would be a OSF. Would 2 large fish be too much for a 4ft tank or would a 5ft tank be OK?

How do you find the OSF compared to the Foxface Lo? Is it any more or less hardy? Aggressive? Shy? And what do you think is the tank size needed to have one?

I heard they are not as active as other Foxfaces and less active than many Tangs.

Advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

My one spot Fox Face is active. He finds his spot to clean and stays their eating. He tends to be more a defensive fish. If others come close he flares his spine.

I have mine in a Red Sea 625. It’s a 130 G tank and 59” long by 24” deep and tall. He’s content in my tank. He’s 5” long

My One Spot was not active until I put other larger fish in the tank with him. Once the Tangs went in, he became best friends with them and they all swim together. I would say for a month prior he was in with smaller fish and wasn't happy.

My one spot is out all the time, so you would say active, but for their size they dont utilize that much real estate. With that said I think mine would be ok in a 90g, he's in a 210g now. The marine betta is similar that they also utilze a small chunk of real estate. I wouldnt see a problem with a betta and one spot in a 90g. You are still talking 7" and 8" fish respectfully, so you have to think visully in a 90g. Tangs are different where they cruise horizontally and utilze a huge area, so with the exception of a few small tangs, a minimum of a 6' tank. My scopus tang might be considered for a 90g as well, and is a really cool fish.

That’s good to know. I am seriously thinking of putting a OSF with a Marine Betta, it would be interesting to have a contrast between the two big fish and the rest of the tank which will be smaller fish and medium-sized fish. The Foxface will be among my first fish to go into the tank considering how skittish they are. It’ll go in with my two Ocellaris Clowns (thankfully, they’re Ocellaris and not Clowns of another group).

What have you guys found about their susceptibility (Siganus in general) to disease compared to Tangs and Angels?

The best case scenario would be somewhere in the 4x2x2 120 - 6x1.5x2 125. I agree that they aren't as active as most tangs, but they do grow larger than many tangs we keep, and quickly...and they have venomous spines that are used when threatened. Also when they aren't totally comfortable, they don't display proper color.

I disagree with retailers that have drastically different tank size requirements between unimaculatus and vulpinus. They are almost the same fish. The largest specimen caught just happens to be a couple centimeters longer for one species, where their common lengths are the same. The difference between these two species is like the difference between a phillipine sailfin tang and a desjardin sailfin tang, or the difference between melanurus and Vroliks wrasses.

Oh hey thanks for replying! I know this is a very old thread and this was meant to be a PM to you but unfortunately I didn’t find the option under your profile. If you’re still active I would love to ask you a couple more questions about the Foxface and some other larger fish I’m looking into. If you see this would appreciate your reply :) Thanks
