What the heck is this?

So I've seen this before on my tank and originally thought it was some sand that got stuck to some snail slime. I scraped it off of the glass during my weekly water change & cleaning and thought nothing of it.

Well now I've seen 3 of them show up so it's definitely some kind of critter. they normally don't make it any further up than about 3 inches from my sand bed.

Anyone know what this might be and whether I should be concerned?
