Thanks in advance to all you brilliant tank scholars...

We brought home some stuff last night from the LFS and put it in QT. This morning everyone looked fine, but we were +1...

Currently in the tank:
Heni
Emerald crabs x 3
Tomini
Some Hermits
Longnose Hawk
Diamond Goby
Leopard Wrass

Anyone have a clue as to what this is?

Thanks!!!

Drew and Carol

Might be the mucous cocoon produced by the leopard wrasse.

Goggle mucous cocoon of Wrasses, look at images.

Or sorry, did not read last post.
Some Wrasses produce a mucous cocoon to sleep in at night.
:)

Thanks. This is my first Wrasse - I had no clue. My LFS had no idea what it was, so I'll share the info with them and give you the credit. So no harm then that I removed it? The Wrasse seems none the worse for wear...

Yep. the non sand dwelling wrasses will make a cocoon when sleeping for protection against predators. Google it as it is pretty cool to see. I think parrot fish do the same thing. Cool videos on that too.

No the fish builds a new one every night if needed. They do not return to the old cocoon that I know of.
You can leave the cocoon or remove it.
