So I have begun researching and looking around for a larger system. I currently have a 40 gallon mixed reef. If I go with purchasing a used system, what would you ask? What questions are essential? Thanks!!

If you are going to buy the whole setup, you want to see everything up & running. That way you know everything (pumps, lights, etc.) works and hasn't just been sitting in a garage for months & months. Even if all you buy is just the tank, you want to see it holding water so you know it doesn't leak.

Thank you! What if they are selling coral and livestock along with? Any particular things to ask? Currently it is set up and functioning.

Like @Humblefish stated, ask to see the whole system running. If there are thing that you would like to sell off you can. Most LFS will buy or trade the live stock and rock if they are in good shape

It's just like buying a car, new or used. Buyer beware!!! I could have gotten a 220 with everything in, still running somewhat. It was the that somewhat that worried me the most. And like cars, I didn't want someone else's problem. It was a $15,000 system for $1500. When the guy called me from the hospital to buy his tank, I ordered my new tank!
If you buy used, remember to clean, clean, and clean some more. Only use a solution of R/O water + 40-50% clear vinegar. It's the safe way to go, or buy new. Good Luck!

Been there, done that. I have bought a lot of used equipment. But I will never buy a used tank again. I had a 150 leak about 6 months in. Not fun.

Agree with James983. You're Better off buying a new tank. I purchased a used 240gal, a year in and it sprung a leak! Used tanks are almost kinda fragile in a way that the silicone can get damaged when moving them to a new location.
Do your self a favor and just get a new tank.

Thanks so much for all of the advice! With the suggestions in mind what brands or set ups would you recommend, I am not skilled or knowledgeable enough to build anything from scratch

As I said the other day, I'd go to FAOIS and get a Red Sea reefer. You'll get a great price on it. All the plumbing and sump and stand comes with them. You'll only need to pick and choose what return pump, skimmer and lighting!

Stephanie, I would recommend finding a LFS you can trust. You may not get the best price however you will have someone who can move, set up and teach you about your system. Even if you just buy the tank, plumbing, sump and return pump. After that you can look at lighting and the rest of your equipment based on what you plan on keeping.

@StephanieRodriguez Is there a local club where you live? If you could befriend a knowledgeable local reefer, they might be willing to go with you to check the tank/livestock out. Kind of like taking a mechanic with you to check out a used car. ;)

Another great tool that I purchased even though I have fair experience in building a tank was the Virtual tank build programm from Mr. Saltwater tank TV. You'll learn just about everything you need to know. from what aquarium is right for you, to plumbing, lighting, and proper way to set up an aquarium. You'll be an aquarium expert in no time, and the best part is you have access to the info 24/7
